The ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) is an international humanitarian organization that provides assistance and protection to victims of armed conflicts and other situations of violence. It was founded in 1863 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

The primary mandate of the ICRC is to ensure respect for international humanitarian law (IHL), which includes the Geneva Conventions and other treaties, by both state and non-state actors involved in armed conflicts. The organization’s work focuses on four main areas:

1. Humanitarian Action: The ICRC provides direct assistance and support to those affected by armed conflicts, such as providing medical care, food, water, and shelter to displaced persons and prisoners of war. They also work to reunite separated families and help communities restore essential services.
2. Protection of Victims: The ICRC works to protect and promote the rights of individuals affected by armed conflicts. This includes visiting detainees to monitor their treatment and living conditions, promoting respect for the rules of war, assisting in the search for missing persons, and supporting mine action to reduce the impact of explosive remnants of war.
3. Prevention and Response to Violence: The ICRC aims to prevent and alleviate the suffering caused by violence. They engage in dialogue with relevant actors, including armed forces and armed groups, to promote compliance with IHL and raise awareness about the consequences of violating these rules. They also respond to emergencies, such as natural disasters and outbreaks of diseases, in collaboration with local authorities and other humanitarian organizations.
4. Promotion of IHL and Humanitarian Principles: The ICRC works to promote and strengthen understanding of IHL among states, armed forces, and other stakeholders. They provide training, conduct dissemination activities, and engage in diplomatic efforts to encourage the development and implementation of laws and policies that protect and assist those affected by armed conflicts.

The ICRC operates worldwide, with field offices in numerous countries affected by armed conflicts or other situations of violence. It works independently and neutrally, providing humanitarian assistance and protection based on the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence.
